Subclass 444 (Special Category visa)

Advice on residence and citizenship options for New Zealanders who live in Australia.

New Zealanders living in Australia

Most New Zealand citizens are granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444) when they arrive in Australia, which lets them live and work there. It is a temporary visa, so many New Zealanders later look at permanent residence or Australian citizenship.

Since 1 July 2023, many New Zealand citizens who have lived in Australia for at least four years can apply for Australian citizenship directly, without first getting a permanent visa. Eligibility depends on your own history, so check the current rules with the Department of Home Affairs — or ask us to check them for you.

A good adviser will tell you when you don't need a visa application at all. That's exactly what we do.

How we work with Australian clients

  • Consultations by video call or phone, or in person at our Auckland office. We do not have an Australian office.
  • A free initial consultation to assess your options before you commit to anything.
  • A written client agreement setting out the work and our fees before any paid work begins. Home Affairs charges, medicals and police checks are separate.
  • Priya's MARN covers Australian visa assistance; her IAA licence covers New Zealand immigration advice.

Official information on every Australian visa is published by the Department of Home Affairs at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. This page is general information, not advice for your situation.
